Elton on CBS

Friday 8 September 2006 @ 16:15 - GMT

The September 8, 2006 CBS Early Show featured a performance by Elton, who did The Bridge from the upcoming The Captain and the Kid.

He spoke about the tune  (which he also sang at last night's Fashion Rocks benefit) with the programme's co-anchor, Hannah Storm, during a break in rehearsals for the concert, where he joined artists like Rihanna, Christina Aguilera and the Black Eyed Peas onstage.

Regarding the line, ''You cross the bridge or fade away,'' Elton explained, "In the context that I sing it, it's about having crossed that bridge and survived, the two of us still being together, Bernie Taupin and myself. We've been writing now for nearly 40 years (trying to) chase the ultimate song and not to give up.

"But it also is applicable to everybody in any walk of life. It's like, 'Don't give up.' There's so many people who give up and jump off the bridge.

"You just cannot be successful all the time. I think some of the stuff we did in the '80s and '90s, it was uneven because there was all the pressure to have a hit record to have a chart record and, if you write songs, you're going to write unevenly, anyway. You're not going to write great songs all the time.

"But, I feel, with the last three albums, we've written three really great albums, and we could go on stage and play now without paying any of our old songs, our old hits, and really entertain people really well with them."

Indeed, Elton told his pre-Fashion Rocks audience on Wednesday evening that he has given up on making hit records, and is ''okay with that.''

For a week beginning today, Fashion Rocks is auctioning off items from stars associated with the concert. All proceeds go to the EJAF.

Storm had two of the items on the set: a limited edition rust crocodile Gucci bag with a retail value of $19,500, and a guitar valued at $2,499 signed by some of the music industry' s biggest superstars, Elton among them.
