Illinois City Pays Tribute to a TV Legend

On Labor day, Chicago paid homage to 40 years of Soul Train the longest-running, nationally syndicated television programme was based in that city.

There was a concert at Millennium Parks Jay Pritzker Pavilion where the evening's special guest was Soul Train's founder and host, Don Cornelius.

The lineup of talent included the Impressions, the Chi-Lites, the Emotions and Gene Chandler.

Chicago's Soul Train 40th Anniversary Concert was presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, in partnership with the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture, and capped a weekend of events recalling the venerable show, which attracted names like Elton and David Bowie.

Other activities included a photo exhibit and dance party.

The former, which has been extended to run through October 2 at Expo 72, includes a look at some of the performers' outfits (such as Elton's), and features images of other notables who appeared on the programme, including Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, and Chuck Berry.

Admission is free.
