Elton says the Queen deserves to celebrate her Golden Jubilee after recent family bereavements.
In an interview with tonight's Six O'Clock News on BBC television on May 17, 2002, Elton said the Queen would be pleased that so many acts will be performing at the show. Elton has already filmed his slot for the concert, playing within the palace itself, because he was unable to make it on the day.
Asked whether he thought the Queen would appreciate the show, he said: "I don't know how much the Queen likes pop music - she grins and bears it.
"And she's probably the best in the world at grinning and bearing it at every occasion, whether it's Maori dancing, pop music, or whatever.
"I don't really know what the Queen likes or dislikes, but I know she'll be very pleased that people from my generation - and the younger generation - will come out there and perform because they want to."
