A leading Russian Muslim cleric is warning that fans who attend upcoming concerts by Elton (who recently expressed support for other gay people in Russia), face divine punishment.
“The only thing we can do as believers is to call the people not to give into the temptations of the devil and not attend Elton John’s Russian concerts,” Seidzhagfar Lutfullin, the imam of a mosque told the Nezavisimaya Gazeta daily.
“Divine retribution for taking part in a hotbed of sodomy will fall both on those who attend the concert and those who perform there,” declared the cleric from the Zakaban mosque in Kazan, a city with a large ethnic Tatar Muslim community.
The leader, known for his outspoken statements, also posted a message on the mosque’s Web site calling the singer “the devil’s work.”
Last week, the Christian group Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods, called for a ban on Elton's December concerts. "The statement by this gay guy – Elton John – about his support for gays and other perverts during the upcoming concert in Moscow is an insult to all Russian citizens," the group's coordinator said.
Another conservative group, the Ural Parents Committee, has called on Russian president Vladimir Putin to keep John from performing the Kazan concert
