George Michael's Symphonica, which includes newer renditions of Elton's Idol and Terence Trent D'arby's Let Her Down Easy, has beaten Kylie Minogue's Kiss Me Once to the top of the UK album chart.
"Thank you so much... it's so nice to be able to savour this wonderful moment. I am a lucky man," Michael told OfficialCharts.com.
His album sold 20,000 copies more than Minogue's.
Symphonica is the vocalist's first album in a decade. For his return to the charts, George has done something a little different withSymphonica, which was recorded during the tour of the same name in 2011 and 2012. Working with the legendary producer Phil Ramone (who died last year), the artist recorded a mixture of his classic hits, including Praying For Time and One More Try, along with carefully selected cover versions backed by an orchestra.
The disc also contains some of the tunes he had recorded for his 1999 covers collection, Songs From The Last Century, including Roberta Flack’s The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
