Peter, Elton And Bernie Discuss ''Goodbye Yellow Brick Road''

Written by Chief Editor.

Coinciding with Elton's birthday today, is the 40th anniversary reissue of the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album.

Besides remastered tracks, there are new versions of old favourites from names like Ed Sheeran, Miguel, the Band Perry, and Fall Out Boy.

Behind the scenes of this project is renowned record producer Peter Asher, who called in to the K-EARTH 101 Morning Show to explain how he came to be involved . . . which he says all started with a phone call from the man himself.

“Elton called me up and said he had this idea – they were doing this big repackage, remaster, reissue thing for ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ – and would I be interested in…re-cutting eight or so of these tracks to be part of the repackage?” he explained.

This, of course, was a no brainer for Peter.

“I was thrilled to death of the idea, because they’re such great, amazing songs, and getting a chance to re-imagine them with all these cool new artists is incredibly exciting,” he commented.

Peter said that he and Elton made lists “by email and by phone” of artists they wanted to be included on the tribute album.

“It’s a brilliant record. And the thing I keep emphasising is, it was never our intention to outdo or compete with the original record,” the producer said. “There were some people, Elton and I agreed on right away. I think the first two names on our list were Ed Sheeran…and Miguel.”

Asked if there were any artists they really wanted but couldn’t get, Peter teased:

“Yes, but I’m not going to tell you who.”

He added:  “I’ll tell you the truth actually, I really wanted Muse to do ‘Funeral For A Friend’ and ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ because they would have done just this huge, majestic – I mean I’m a gigantic Muse fan.”

Elton and Bernie Taupin also have been talking about the reissue, not to mention the original (with Bernie comparing the process to being in ''a factory.'')
