A Special Saturday Night in Leigh

Written by Chief Editor.

Over the weekend, Elton played Leigh, which the Guardian called ''an unfashionable small town in the metropolitan borough of Wigan.''

But the Rocket Man was thrilled to be there. He said, "As a young kid I used to watch rugby league with Eddie Waring on TV, but I never dreamed I'd play the Leigh team's stadium."

The audience was also delighted, singing along to numbers like  Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Leigh/Me and Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting).

Wearing a blue diamante jacket, Elton did a 2-1/2 hour set that ranged from Tiny Dancer to Are You Ready For Love.

He remarked:

"I enjoy it so much more playing places like this, or Doncaster or Carlisle, because I get to see people that I wouldn't get to see anywhere else."
