Elton is praising Prince Harry for seeking counseling in recent years to deal with the death of his mother.
It was 20 years ago this summer that Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris.
''Your bravery, honesty and humanity are a beacon in today’s world,'' the performer wrote to Harry in an Instagram post. ''It’s a sign of strength to ask for help, not weakness. Asking for help saved me from the mental illness of my addictions. We all need help sometimes, and must never feel shame or stigma in doing so.''
It was not until three years ago that Harry sought professional help at the urging of his brother Prince William.
''I can safely say that losing my mum at the age of 12, and therefore shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years, has had a quite serious effect on not only my personal life but my work as well,'' the 32-year-old told British journalist Bryony Gordon.
He added: ''I have probably been very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions when all sorts of grief and sort of lies and misconceptions and everything are coming to you from every angle.''
