Elton may be a British citizen who can’t vote in New York, but that hasn’t stopped him from endorsing Andrew Cuomo’s re-election as he faces a potential Democratic primary challenge from gay actress Cynthia Nixon.
In a three-paragraph statement, Elton and David Furnish said the governor has “championed a progressive agenda” and was “working diligently with HIV/AIDS experts” to end the disease.
“His bold plan serves as a model for other states to emulate, and we are thankful to him for his tremendous leadership,” they said.
“We will never forget his incredible leadership on marriage equality and everything he has done to champion gay rights,” the couple said of the same-sex marriage law Cuomo ushered through the Legislature and enacted in 2011.
“For these important reasons, we stand with and in support of Governor Andrew Cuomo as he announces his candidacy for re-election for Governor of the state of New York.”
Cuomo doesn't face re-election for another 8 months. But he has already announced in recent days endorsements from a range of figures, including former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney.
