70 At 71: Elton's March 6th Engagement

Written by Chief Editor.

Elton has sold out Madison Square Garden 70 times in almost 45 years.

The 70th time was Wednesday night--which also happened to be the 70th concert on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

The 71-year-old wept as he spoke of his gratitude for American fans as well as his love for New York and this particular venue. He also thanked ''the best band I've ever played with,'' Bernie Taupin, his family, and his EJAF colleagues.

In addition, Elton, whose set list included Indian Sunset, Believe, Philadelphia Freedom, and Take Me To The Pilot, thanked everyone who’s ever bought a record — “or a CD or an 8-track or (wincing) a cassette, cassettes were the worst!” — or a ticket or a piece of merchandise.

“I’ve had the most incredible life, I’m so lucky and so grateful,” he said, singling out the people who have attended his concerts over the decades, because “I love all of it, but the greatest feeling in the world is playing a song for another human being and they react.”
