Universal Music Confirms 2008 Fire Ruined Multiple Recording Masters

Written by Chief Editor.

In new court filings, the Universal Music Group has confirmed that recording masters belonging to 19 different artists, among them Elton and Nirvana, were damaged or destroyed in the 2008 fire at the center of a $100 million lawsuit.

The admission is the first time Universal has publicly confirmed the loss or damage of master recordings.

The court papers, filed Thursday, also acknowledge damaged or destroyed masters recorded by the likes of Michael McDonald, Beck, R.E.M., Y&T, Bryan Adams, Sheryl Crow, Les Paul, Soundgarden, Peter Frampton, Slayer, Suzanne Vega, and White Zombie.

Universal said however that at least for Adams, Nirvana, Y&T and Beck, safety copies exist for all the affected recordings
