Kelly Asbury has died after a long battle with cancer.
He was a three-time Annie Awards nominee for helming Shrek 2 and writing and directing Gnomeo & Juliet. He also provided the voices of the tiny Red Goon Gnomes in the film, which featured Elton's music.
The 60-year-old, who directed last year's UglyDolls, was also known for co-penning the story for Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Before this, in the late '80s, he worked for Disney on projects which included The Little Mermaid and James and the Giant Peach.
In addition, he worked as a story artist on the Pixar classic Toy Story and was a creative consultant on Sherlock Gnomes, the sequel to Gnomeo & Juliet.
The Beaumont, Texas native was an author as well: He wrote a biography called Dummy Days, about ventriloquists like Paul Winchell, Edgar Bergen, Jeff Dunham, and Shari Lewis.
He is survived by his wife Jacquie Boggs; stepsons Andrew and Connor Boggs; sister Gwen Speed; and niece Leslie McKeller.
