Remembering Del Newman

Written by Chief Editor.

Dmme.net has reported that an arranger on the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album has died.

Del Newman also contributed to Caribou and worked with artists as diverse as Peter Frampton, Rod Stewart, Leo Sayer and Carly Simon. He released his memoirs in 2010.

Also in 2010, he recalled an earlier encounter with Elton.

Del, who was also a conductor and producer, was part of a session for Joe Boyd's Warlock Music Company in the late sixties. He told EJW the tunes were for promotional purposes and featured Elton on seven numbers (the other four were performed by Linda Peters, who later married Richard Thompson). The composers were Nick Drake; John Martyn; Beverly Martin; Ed Carter; and Mike Heron. Jim Capaldi was on drums, while Pat Donaldson was on bass, and Simon Nicol played guitar.
