Pope Francis has expressed support for civil unions for same-sex couples for the first time, according to the Catholic News Agency. This pleased Elton, who responded on Instagram.
The performer thanked the pope, writing: ''My civil union and subsequent marriage to David Furnish has brought us immeasurable happiness and security.
''Giving your blessing to same-sex unions is a major step towards equality, and a foundation for which countless others can enjoy the same protections and happiness. God bless you.''
Pope Francis made the historic remarks in Francisco, a new documentary film which premiered Wednesday at the Rome Film Festival. He said, ''Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. They're children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it.''
He also stated:''What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered.''
