Chris Evans' fundraising event, Dine & Disco, has raised a record-breaking 1.9 million pounds for the EJAF through a Virgin Radio phone auction. Broadcast live on the show yesterday morning, Virgin Radio auctioned off 45 pairs of tickets to see Elton perform with Rick Astley in an intimate gig at the Chewton Glen Hotel on Saturday, June 26, 2021.
Also on the agenda are a champagne reception and celebrity chefs including Tom Kerridge and James Martin.
The Rocket Man joined Chris on the broadcast to unveil the auction amount and talk about a ''new Elton John'' appearing at next year's Dine and Disco performance. He's been ''ramping up'' his exercise and fitness routine so there ought to be ''an audible gasp when there's this toothpick on the stage with gloves.''
The 73-year-old is looking forward to the benefit since he hasn't played in so long.
''It'll be like the first time I've ever played.''
Elton also said he'd like to get younger people involved with the foundation, especially in Africa, and shared his wish list: Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Burna Boy, Pierre-Emerick Emiliano Francois Aubameyang, and Lewis Hamilton.
As for Dine & Disco itself, Elton hopes Gary Barlow can join them. He called him ''one of the kindest men there is,'' adding, ''I'm sure that we'll get Gary in somewhere . . . he can set my piano up for me if he wants to!''
