Taron Egerton had three months of intensive music lessons before taking on his role in Rocketman, which is to be released next spring.

The Welshman said he enjoyed learning the piano so much that he plans to keep playing.

He told the Evening Standard: “I had never played before so I had to learn from scratch. I did three months of lessons and was lucky enough to get some personal guidance from Elton. He really is an incredible man.”

The 29-year-old added: “I’ve loved playing so much that it is definitely something that I’ll be continuing.”

The songwriter and his husband David Furnish are both producers on the musical, which tells the story of Elton’s life and career.

Egerton described them as “two very kind, very beautiful people” and said: “Their kindness to me — a sort of slightly overwhelmed young actor who is seeking to portray Elton in his life — was just amazing.”

He said he also stayed at the couple’s house and was given access to Elton’s diaries from the Seventies, which helped him prepare for the role.
