Joe Grant, who contributed character designs, story ideas, sketches and gags for popular movies like Aladdin, Pocahontas and The Lion King, has died after suffering a heart attack.

The 96-year-old began his career at Disney in 1933. Although he left in ’49 to start his own businesses, he returned 40 years later.

In 1992, the New York-born artist–with over 70 caricatures now in the Smithsonian‘s permanent collection–was named an official Disney legend. Other honours have included a Ruben from the National Cartoonists Society and lifetime recognition from the L.A. Film Critics Association.
