Thanks in part to Elton, the International Sephardic Education Foundation raised over a million bucks on April 19, the next day’s Jerusalem Post reported.

Not only did he appear free of charge, the singer participated in the auction. He paid to donate $6,500 worth of textbooks to Israeli children unable to afford them.

During his performance, dressed in a suit featuring leopard print on the front and back, Elton dedicated Candle in the Wind to his friend, Lily Safra. The host of the Waldorf-Astoria dinner, she founded the organisation with her late husband in 1977.
