A restaurant in West London is offering an ashtray amnesty to mark its 10th birthday, reported Ananova on January 28, 2003.

Quaglino’s has lost 25,000 of its Q-shaped ashtrays in a decade, but says questions won’t be asked if people return them.

Anyone returning an ashtray will receive a free glass of Perrier-Jouët champagne and the restaurant will make a £1 donation to the Elton John Aids Foundation.

The restaurant sells its Sir Terence Conran-designed ashtrays at £10, for the standard silver-grey finish, or £15 each for a gold-dipped limited edition of 2,000 with engraving commemorating the 10th anniversary.

At least 50 ashtrays a week have been going missing since it opened, added The Times.

Now the restaurant says questions will not be asked of people who “inadvertently allowed one of our iconic ‘Q’ shaped ashtrays to slip into your pockets”.
