Premiership group Watford Football Club has brought the freehold of the Red Lion pub, located opposite its Vicarage Road ground, the Drinks Business Review revealed yesterday.
The team said the move was an effort to secure the history of the club and enhance the experience of supporters. The Red Lion pub is already used by thousands of Watford fans as part of their match day experience.
A spokesman said: “We regard the pub as part of Watford’s football community and we recognize its historic position in the area.”
He continued: “We are committed to improving our fans’ experience on match days. Opportunities such as this don’t come around very often and when the pub came onto the market the club felt that it was opportune to acquire it.”
Speculation had been mounting among fans, suggesting new tavern names and debating the potential for the establishment to be the new home of the official supporters club.
