Sir Elton has sold an indigenous Australian artwork at a Sydney auction for more than $400,000.

The sale of Emily Kngwarreye‘s colourful floral work My Country, 1993 at Bonhams auction house in Woollahra last night blitzed its listing price of $150,000.

According to Bonhams, the prized piece – owned for two decades by Elton and David Furnish – drew fierce bidding from the sale room as well as by phones and online.

Bonhams Australia chairman Mark Fraser says the auction house felt privileged to handle a painting by “Australia’s most celebrated indigenous artist” and from “such an esteemed collection.”
