As the world remembers the passing of the Princess of Wales 20 years ago, data confirms that a tribute record to her remains the best-selling chart single of all time in the United Kingdom.

Demand was higher than anticipated. In its first week, the song sold 658,000 copies, and in its second, a whopping 1.54 million. By its fourth week on sale it was already the biggest selling single of all time, lapping another charity song, Do They Know It’s Christmas – which at that point stood at 3.52 million – in the process.

Candle in the Wind 1997, which was backed with another EJ number, Something About The Way You Look Tonight, spent five weeks at Number 1 and has sold an incredible 4.9 million copies to date. Worldwide, it has sold over 33 million copies. Proceeds have gone towards Princess Diana’s charities.

While Elton has continued to perform the original Candle in The Wind, he won’t do the 1997 version, also known as Goodbye England’s Rose, unless her sons request this.
