Elton has posted a couple of photos of himself at GQ‘s Men of the Year Awards. He looks conservative in a tuxedo in the first shot, but the next one showcases a wild and colourful design (”Elton” and the face of a big cat) on the back.
The singer says he was happy to help honour Alessandro Michele, ”the man who put the beauty back into Gucci.”
Stanley Tucci hosted the event, and Elton joked about the awards being held in Tate Modern‘s cavernous Turbine Hall instead of the Royal Opera House of previous years.
“What a lovely intimate setting this is,” he said. “Next year, Calais. I can see it… Migrant of the Year.”
The Rocket Man also told the A-list audience: “When Tom Ford left Gucci if all went very pear-shaped, a bit like myself.
“You could go in there and fire a cannon through Gucci because the clothes were so f***ing awful.”
Elton complained that “it became another staid old label” and but added that Michele had injected “energy… colour” and “passion back into Gucci.”
“Now you have to fight your way into Gucci,” he declared.
Praising the quality of the designer label, Elton said: “Fashion needs it because it’s as dull as f***ing dishwater at the moment.”
He added: “It gives me great pleasure to introduce someone who’s actually got some talent in fashion, Alessandro Michele.”
