SOS Gala Set a Record

Billboard has noted a confession Barry Manilow made at last week’s Ella Awards in Los Angeles.

He told the crowd he had always wanted to marry the honoree. However, during his acceptance speech, Elton declined.

”I couldn’t have married you. There would have been too much fuss in front of the mirror.”

The event, raising money for the Society of Singers, which helps vocalists in need, broke a fund-raising record for the organisation. Previously, this was set in 1990, when Frank Sinatra was feted.

In fact, Elton mentioned the late singer, recalling a youth spent listening to him, Ella Fitzgerald (for whom the award is named), Dean Martin and Bing Crosby.

He was visibly moved by many of the renditions of his and Bernie Taupin‘s compositions, including Smokey Robinson‘s soulful Tiny Dancer and k.d. Lang‘s stripped down Sorry Seems to be The Hardest Word.
