A new awards scheme from the BBC, The People’s Awards, will honour individuals from all walks of life – from celebrities and scientists to those who have performed acts of bravery or battled against adversity. Among those nominated in the first tranche are singers Sir Elton John, Robbie Williams and Sir Paul McCartney.

The winners are to be chosen by members of the public and will receive their prizes at a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall, London on October 6, 2000.

The full shortlist for the awards was revealed on BBC One September 10, 2000, in a programme hosted by TV presenters Michael Buerk and Gaby Roslin.
