Elton is 2nd biggest album act of 1990s

Spice Girls‘ debut Spice is the biggest-selling album of the decade, creaming an estimated £20m. They also take the number 3 position with album Spiceworld, which earns £13m.


Elton takes 2nd place with The Lion King (at £14m sales) and Oasis are at number 4 with What’s The Story? (Morning Glory), earning £12m, beating their idols The Beatles, whose Anthology Vol 1 wrestles in 7th place with £8m.


The list of what the nation’s pop stars are worth is compiled by Cliff Dane, the industry’s financial expert, in Rock Accounts 1999.


Elton’s other appearances in this authoritative chart: Position 8 Very Best Of, takes £8m, and position 14, Love Songs, bags £7m.


Annie Lennox shares joint 29th place with The Beatles’ Live At The BBC and Elton’s The One. Seven Elton albums make it in, equalling estimated sales of around £44m.
