Who was it that turned up to see premiership football team West Ham United train in their East End of London grounds? Elton is a well-known, er, Watford FC supporter.

An Elton John lookalike fooled West Ham players when he turned up at the club’s training ground, in Chadwell Heath, reported The Sun on April 14, 2001.

Hammers fan and legitimate Cockney Ray Johnson wanted to meet his heroes so much he sneaked into the ground pretending to be Sir Elton. [ Naughty Boy]

England midfielder Frank Lampard was amazed that “Sir Elton” talked like a real East Ender. Lampard said: “I’ve just spoken to Elton and I had no idea he talked like that he’s a real East Ender isn’t he?”

French hitman Freddie Kanoute also fell for the disguise. He told Ray: “I’ve got all your records, it’s so great to meet you.”

Croatian striker Davor Suker asked for Elton’s address so he could post him some shirts to be signed.

West Ham manager Harry Redknapp said he realised “Sir Elton” was a fake, but admitted: “He’s an absolute spitting image.”

In The Sun edition April 13, 2001, the tabloid poked fun at real Elton, and suggested he hosts British TV quiz hit, The Weakest Link.
