Elton John arrives with David Furnish for the Kennedy Center Honors gala at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004At a White House reception Sunday afternoon, Elton called his Kennedy Center honour ”the icing on the cake,” the AP reported on December 6, 2004.

But when Robert Downey Jr. offered his salute, calling his friend ”a genius, life saver and the other first lady,” he received an icy reception.

Robert, who performed Levon, spoke about Elton’s help in overcoming drugs as well as his music, saying the pianist has never been out of style.

Kid Rock, who did Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting, recalled that the very first concert he ever attended was Elton’s. Others singing the Englishman’s tunes were Heather Headley with Your Song; Fantasia, with Sorry Seems to be The Hardest Word; and Billy Joel, doing Bennie And The Jets and The Bitch is Back.

The latter credited Elton with bringing piano ”back to the forefront of rock and opening doors for others.”

{As previously reported, the festivities air on CBS December the 21st.}
