Elton was presented with a special award by the American edition of GQ magazine. The US GQ "Men of the Year" Awards took place in New York on October 26, 2000.

Elton received the David Yurman Humanitarian Award for his work with the Elton John Aids Foundation. It was presented to him by actress Susan Sarandon. It's only the second time the award has been presented. Last year's recipient was film-maker Steven Spielberg.

A spokeswoman for GQ America: "This award is given to people who not only give their money to a cause but also give up their time."

Russell Crowe, Pierce Brosnan, James Gandolfini, Michael J. Fox and Matthew Broderick were among the honorees at the show hosted by Dennis Miller.

The GQ "Men of the Year" Awards will air nationally on Fox Network on December 9, 2000.
