Elton has refused to adopt a child - despite desperate pleas from David Furnish, the Daily Telegraph magazine has reported.
The entertainer has told his life partner he has no desire to be a father - but has sponsored an African orphan.
David said: "We've talked about it a lot and, personally, I would.
"But Elton feels that we wouldn't be around enough at the moment to give the kind of support a child needs."
"We have adopted a child in Africa and we both have tons of godchildren, whom we care about very much. That will have to do."
However, the filmmaker admits his paternal instincts are still strong despite Elton's insistence.
He added that while playing with youngsters, he sometimes found himself trying to imagine what fatherhood would be like, ''but sadly, it's not to be.''
David also recently spoke about the couple's friendship with Madonna, claiming everything was fine.
However, the Material Girl told Out magazine that she has still not spoken to Elton, after he publicly accused her of miming at concerts.
She said that she had not yet made up with him.
Elton slammed her after she receiving a Best Live Act nomination at a Q awards ceremony, sparking a series of public outbursts aimed at other stars.
Madonna says she is aware that she became a target during the row.
"He did send me a letter apologising for his last outburst, right before his wedding, she noted.
But he seems to be angry. I seem to have become a target.
It's not very gentlemanly or gracious," she added.
