Elton is Headlining a Writing Contest

Friday 20 March 2009 @ 16:16 - GMT

Those in the age range of 13-19 who are in the New York region are welcome to try their hand at writing a play.

The winner will be selected for production by the creative team of Billy Elliot and performed at Broadways Imperial Theatre in a red-carpet gala event on June 15.

Three stars of Billy Elliot kicked things off at a press event in Manhattan yesterday, along with early contest registrants from three schools, including Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows.

The event is designed to encourage young people in the metropolitan area to use their creativity and experience theater. It is a new element of Fidelitys FutureStage program for youth. Elton, who composed the Billy Elliot music, is the contests honorary chairman.

In a video, Elton points out how essential the arts are and likens his development to a butterfly, once a caterpillar. To see the clip, in which the vocalist also advises folks to follow their dreams, as well as to read the contest rules, go to
