Billy Elliot ended up receiving ten Tony awards last night, although Elton, who performed during the opening segment, did not win Best Score.
Even so, Billy Elliot was voted Best musical. And the three young stars who take turns in the lead role David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish jointly won the award for best leading actor in a musical. They were astonished and tongue-tied at first, causing roars of delight from the audience.
Elton helped accept the best musical honour.
"Thank you for accepting us so beautifully on Broadway," he said. "We came here at a hard time economically. You opened up your wallets and you opened up your hearts to us. And we love you for it. Thank you."
He was introduced by Eric Fellner, the head of Working Title, which produced the film version and the musical. He credited Elton with conceiving the idea of bringing the movie to the stage.
The production's other wins included awards for Best Director, Sound and Lighting.
