Grand night benefiting MAC Cosmetics event

Wednesday 18 December 2002 @ 20:14 - GMT

Elton and his friends turned out on December 16, 2002, to promote the MAC Cosmetics-sponsored show where proceeds were aimed to combat AIDS.

The venue was the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London, a location in west London where Elton had not played for 20 years! He also played there on December 17, 2002.

EJW.com was able to get you some EXCLUSIVE photos of the celebrities arriving on December 16, 2002, which you can click here to obtain. Enjoy!

Elton signed up as a benefactor of the MAC Cosmetics campaign in 2001.

After The Ballad Of The Boy In The Red Shoes Elton attacked the Ronald Regan administration. "Reagan did fuck all for people with AIDS. He's a number one arsehole." He then added: "And fuck going to war. Bush is another number one arsehole."

The set list was familiar right up until Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, for which he thanked toyband Blue as the single has just reached number one in the UK charts.

Elton's been having fun improvising Bernie Taupin's lyrics for Crocodile Rock. This night he chose to blast: "I remember when rock was young, my old todger had so much fun."

Instead of leaving the stage a second time to change before Your Song Elton stayed and played through, presumably because there was an after show party to go to.

The benefit concert for the MAC Cosmetics and Elton John AIDS Foundation saw the celebrities out in force. The expensive seats in the first level included Frank Skinner, Lulu, actresses Michelle Collins and Denise Van Outen, TV presenter Cat Deeley, Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys, journalist Janet Street-Porter and, of course David Furnish and Elizabeth Hurley.

Elton and the band performed their final date of 2002 capping about 120 shows this year on December 17, 2002.

It was the same show as the previous night minus the celebrities. However, two real celebrity fans were there, Lulu and Kiki Dee. The night before it was clear that Lulu neither relished not needed photographers to preen an ego. She had didged photos by running into the venue and we managed to scrape a few of her through a window!

Elton was less chatty than the night before but he was clearly stung my a negative press report.

"Fuck the newspapers, I don't care what they say!" he said, and again thanked fans for their love and loyalty. The article may have been in the Independent newspaper and can be found here.
