Pal DJ Chris Evans persuaded Elton to interview stars such as newly weds Posh Spice and David Beckham, Michael Jackson and Madonna in six one-hour specials on Saturday evenings in the UK.
Ginger Television boss Evans will act as executive producer on the shows, already the subject of fierce bidding between BBC1 and ITV.
A friend of Elton said: "He'll be a natural for this kind of show. With his personality, he'll put people at their ease. Elton's also got loads of contacts in showbiz so getting top calibre guests will be easy."
