Money to be had, from the other networks

This year MTV Networks is seeking to use an Elton John performance to corner more of the still-lucrative advertising market, reported The New York Times on May 6, 2003.

Despite some evidence of a sluggish US and world economy, there is money to be had and MTV, which has been saying for some time that it has the best prices for its commercials among cable channels, wants to take on the big boys: the big broadcast networks.

Today, for the first time, MTV will mount a full-fledged, network-style sales presentation for advertisers, complete with a performance by Elton John. The goal is simple: to steal advertising revenue from the likes of ABC, NBC and Rupert Murdoch's Fox.

CBS, being a sister network under the corporate parent, Viacom, is not a target of this campaign (and, for the most part, CBS attracts a different, older audience than most of the MTV channels).
