Elton is delighted that, following a global protest by fans of Rina Sawayama, the BRIT Awards and the Mercury Prize have revised their eligibility criteria. This allows UK residents to enter those competitions even if they are not British citizens.
Elton was sad for the younger entertainer when she was excluded from the Mercury Prize last year, but is glad ''to see the rules changed so the next generation of multicultural British talent can be recognised.''
Rina weighed in as well, writing on Instagram that she was ''over the moon to share the news that following a number of conversations, the BPI has decided to change the rules of eligibility for all nominees for the BRIT Awards and Mercury Prize. Starting this year, artists (like me) will be eligible for nominations even without British citizenship. The rules have been broadened to include those who have been a resident of the UK for five years.''
