Watford Football Club, where Elton is Life President, issued the following statement on July 11, 2002.

Watford Association Football Club, a subsidiary of Watford Leisure PLC, has today named Ray Lewington as their new first-team manager.

Lewington, 45, was Reserve team manager last season and had been fulfilling a caretaker role at Vicarage Road since the departure of Gianluca Vialli last month.

A first-team coach to work alongside Ray will be appointed in the near future.

Completing the coaching set-up at Vicarage Road, Nigel Gibbs – who retired from playing after 20 years at Vicarage Road at the end of last season – will become Reserve Team Manager, combining that with his current post of Chief Scout.

Commenting on the appointment, Tim Shaw, Chief Executive of Watford said:  “On behalf of the entire Board of Directors I would like to say how delighted we are with this appointment. We interviewed nine quality candidates for the position, some of them twice, and Ray Lewington has come out as our number one
choice totally on merit.

“It may be that not too many supporters know Ray particularly well at present, but I can assure them that once they meet him they will immediately appreciate the qualities that have led us to offer him the post.”
