Last night, the stage version of Moulin Rouge! opened at the Al Hirshfeld Theatre on Broadway. It had dozens of songs–some in their entirety; others in bits and pieces. Included were numbers which were a prominent part of Baz Luhrmann‘s 2001 movie, such as Elton and Bernie Taupin‘s Your Song and the Police‘s Roxanne.

Newer tunes were also featured, including Sia’s Chandelier and Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical and RCA will soon record a cast album, to be released in all formats by Luhrmann’s  label, House of Iona, and RCA Records this fall.

On the subject of Your Song, Bonhams auctioned off the original handwritten lyrics in November.

Taupin was reportedly waiting for John on a London rooftop when he wrote the now-famous line: “I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss.”

After getting the verses, it took Elton just 10 minutes to come up with the melody.

The document was sold by the lyricist’s ex-wife, Maxine Taupin.
