The Vatican has declared that the Catholic Church won’t bless same-sex unions because God ”cannot bless sin,” which has offended Sir Elton.

The Vatican’s orthodoxy office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, issues a two-page decree which was approved by Pope Francis, according to the Associated Press. The statement stressed that the Catholic Church still welcomes and blesses gay people but cannot ultimately see their union as part of God’s plan.

This led Elton to tweet: ”How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they ‘are sin,’ yet happily make a profit from investing millions in Rocketman–a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David?”

The vocalist attached photos of two side-by-side articles to the tweet, with one featuring the Vatican’s refusal to bless same-sex marriages, and the other a Daily Beast article titled, ‘How the Vatican Spent Millions of Elton John’s Biopic.’

The allegation hasn’t been confirmed or denied by the Vatican. This news appeared in an Italian publication, Corriere Della Sera, examining the Vatican’s various investments using its Peter’s Pence fund. The article claims that millions went to finance the production of films such as Men in Black and Rocketman.

Elton was an executive producer of the motion picture, and David Furnish also served as a producer. It brought in $195.2 million at the box office after its release on May 31, 2019.
