It took until this summer for the Boston Globe newspaper to figure out that columnist Patricia Smith was making stuff up, wrote the Atlanta Constitution newspaper 13 August 1998.

But Elton John apparently had her number way back in 1986.

The Chicago Tribune reported this week that the part-time Atlantan resident Elton telephoned Smith’s then-employer, the Chicago Sun-Times, in August 1986 to complain about a concert review that ran with her by-line.

Elton pointed out that Smith had both his costumes and setlist wrong in the review.

Smith insisted to editors at the time that she really did attend

the concert but was distracted by her date!
