In 2007, Barbara Walters showed off some holiday cards on The View.
Although one was from then President Bush and first lady Laura Bush, the TV veteran wasn’t happy, expressing dismay that they would send out greetings containing Scripture.
She explained:
“First of all, let me show you the cover of the White House, which is nice and bland…So that’s pleasant enough. This is what interested me, that it is a religious Christmas card. Usually in the past when I have received a Christmas card, it’s been ‘happy holiday’s’ and so on- And this says:
“‘You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. . . .”
Walters also showed her co-hosts a Christmas card from Elton and his partner David Furnish that had angels on the cover.
Joy Behar called Elton’s card “religious,” and Barbara responded, “But it doesn’t say anything religious. It says ‘Season’s Greetings.’”
More recently, Elton incurred the wrath of his fellow knight David Tang for sending Christmas cards that he has not signed personally.
“There are always the common few who do not write anything in their cards and send them with stamped signatures, like Elton John,” the founder of ICorrect writes in the Financial Times. “Just as one thought of showing it off on one’s grand piano.”
