Like many Brits, Sir Elton was shocked by Thursday’s vote to exit the European Union, which lead to Prime Minister David Cameron’s resignation a day later.

The songwriter made his feelings known at his first show since the referendum, telling the crowd at Meadowbank Stadium the sunshine that shone over his gig during a gloomy weekend was for them.

“We haven’t seen blue skies anywhere else in Britain,” he said on Saturday. “That’s because you voted to stay in Europe. You’re the only f**king sensible people in Britain.”

He subsequently summed up the political mood of roughly half of the UK, who wanted to stay in the EU, by playing I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues.
