Karl Lagerfeld has died at the age of 85, in Paris.

The German designer, who was the creative director for Chanel and Fendi, was one of the industry’s most prolific figures. He also designed collections for his own brand and collaborated with high street brand H&M.

He had been unwell for several weeks, and had missed a number of fashion shows.

Friends and associates reacted on Instagram, with Elton, Victoria Beckham and Donatella Versace among them.

What a talent. What an appetite for life. Wonderful and lethal company. Never a dull moment,” wrote the former.

Victoria posted:

”So incredibly sad to hear this. Karl was a genius and always so kind and generous to me both personally and professionally.”

Donatella wrote:

“Karl, your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I.”

Meanwhile Bernard Arnault, President of LVMH, the luxury goods conglomate which owns Fendi, released the following statgement: ”With Karl Lagerfeld, we lose one of the creative geniuses that helped make Paris the world capital of fashion and Fendi one of the most innovative Italian fashion houses. We owe him a lot: his taste and his talent were the most exceptional that I have ever known.”
