For A Tribe Called Quest‘s final project — their sixth studio album and first record in 18 years, titled We Got It From Here, Thank You for Your Service — the collective (Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Jarobi White and the late Phife Dawg, who passed from complications from diabetes earlier this year) didn’t skimp on big names. As announced previously, the participants include Elton, Jack White, Andre 3000, and Kendrick Lamar.
The well-received album, which came out last month, includes Solid Wall of Sound, built around a sample of Bennie and the Jets. It features frequent Tribe collaborator Busta Rhymes. What’s more, Elton himself makes a cameo at the end of the song, singing new lyrics over his “Bennie” chords.
Some time back, this Web site also reported that The Getaway, the 11th release from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has Elton on one of the tracks. Sick Love, boasting Elton on piano, is said to be similar to Bennie and the Jets.
“The song that he plays on was a song that we were working on for awhile before we started recording it,” said guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, “and it just sounded like Elton was involved somehow, someway, So we thought we should just invite him down and see if he likes it and wants to play on it.”
Now the Peppers have premiered a music video for the song, an animated clip from Beth Jeans Houghton that tells a story mirroring Anthony Kiedis’ lyrics. A shirt with Elton’s image can be seen at the beginning of the clip.
